Stirling John recently went viral for his song and subsequent music video he released to honour the victims of the April shooting spree in Nova Scotia.
Stirling John is an RCMP officer, single parent and in the rare moments when he has free time, a musician going big online.
The Parkland RCMP constable and liaison to the Enoch Cree Nation has lived in the Spruce Grove area for seven years and recently went viral for his song and subsequent music video he released to honour the victims of the April shooting spree in Nova Scotia. Dubbed For You, it has racked up more than 60,000 views online and been described as beautiful and a “tribute to those who provide a light when needed most.”
Before he reworked the piece after initially composing it in December, John began his passion for performing in Ontario. He was five and sang in church and eventually focused on policing due to needing a career and being afraid of trying out for Canadian Idol during its run. Life sent him in a number of different directions and to different detachments, but, with time, he was back to a hobby that is now a future.
“I did not do music for years,” he said. “But when I worked up in isolated posts in the north I would fly in with my cooler of food, my guitar and an amplifier. I taught myself off of Google and what brought me back to performing was a serious call that impacted me personally. I cannot go into details because it was sealed by the courts, but I wrote a song for the victim and later recorded it with Hometown Stereo.”
John, 34, sees himself as a country and rock artist and added that his influences include artists like Garth Brooks. He tries to stay humble like the Oklahoma-born musician and said that he hopes he can stay on that side of the industry the further he moves along within it.
“I learned along the way in the music scene that there are those who are modest and those who are too much of themselves,” John said. “They get in it for the wrong reasons, but one thing I do know is For You’s reaction confirms that I am doing what I need to do with music.”
In the future he is planning to go out east to record the song, and, above all else, is not giving up on his dream.
“There are a lot of cool things happening for me in the music world,” he said. “It is not easy, but nothing ever is easy.”
